Mokume-gane is a Japanese procedure producing a variety of unique patterns from layers of mixed metals. Brass, bronze, copper, gold (including rose, yellow, and white), iron, platinum, silver (including 925 Sterling & 935 Argentium), and titanium can all be used. I use 935 Argentium Sterling Silver & Copper Mokume-gane.
The layers are made from stacked sheets of alternating metals. They can be heated & forged, soldered, or hydraulic pressed to fuse the layers. Various chisels & cutting techniques are used to expose the metals, and an ongoing process of flattening & cutting brings out the distinctive look. Ranges in color are brought about from the metal differences and applied patinas resulting in one-of-a-kind works of art.
